CANADIAN ISLAMIC CONGRESS REACHES 10-YEAR LANDMARK, EMBARKS ON NEW COURSE UNDER NEW NATIONAL PRESIDENT.
OTTAWA, ON. A new national president and new agenda mark the anniversary of the Canadian Islamic Congress’s 10th successful year as the voice of Canadian Muslims.
The CIC Board appointed Mrs.Wahida Valiante as the organization’s national President, effective from January 1, 2009. She previously served CIC as its Vice-president.
"I am most fortunate to assume my duties at time when CIC has both an extremely strong Board of Directors and an outstanding national Executive Director in Ottawa - Imam Dr. Zijad Delic," she said, adding "I will need all the resources and support that I can get in setting a new agenda and tone for CIC as the preeminent voice of Canadian Muslims. We are evolving to become more than just an advocate on behalf of Muslim Canadians; we also want to be an advocate of Canada itself. This great nation offers a unique example of inclusiveness and openness that everyCanadian, Muslim and non- Muslim alike, should be working to preserve and promote."
Over her mandate Mrs. Valiante is committed to setting a course for CIC that will take it into mainstream advocacy for social, economic and environmental justice, peace, and harmony, both at home and abroad.
CIC is Canada's largest national non-profit and wholly independent Muslim Canadian organization. It is an exclusively Canadian non-governmental organization (NGO) with no affiliation to any group, body, ideology or government.
